Lyrics

POSTCARD FROM THE WHITE HOUSE HOTEL

So this is me in the heart of the city
Heat on the streets and the pavements are gritty
But last night this causeless rebel could be found
In the company of the Velvet Underground

John Cale, Sterling and Maureen Tucker
And yes, Lou Reed did say, "Ah, ya mother,"
You could tell that they'd all read Omar Khayam
Every one of them some years older than I am

Now coming back North I was killing time
Thinking "Life's like a run on a long distance line
A high price ticket on a one-way track
Not safe to get off and there's no going back"

But between the stations from time to time
Situations help you stay on the line
I'm not getting sticky, I'm not about to preach
You find me in a place no-one else could ever reach

The finger writes, and then moves on
The Flying Dutchman's dead and gone
And all his tears won't erase a word
And all your tears won't erase a word

So this is me in the heart of the city
Heat on the streets and the pavements are gritty
But last night this causeless rebel could be found
In the company of the Velvet Underground
